1. John Niles of Dorchester and Braintree, Mass. ancestor of all of this surname in the northern part of the United States, as far as the name has been traced, was born, probably in England, about 1603, and died at Braintree 8 Feb. 1693/4, the entry of his death in the town records calling him "Old John Niles" and giving his age "about 91." He married first, probably in 1636, Jane Reed of Braintree, who died 15 May 1654: and secondly Hannah (___) Ames, widow of William Ames. She survived John Niles, and died 31 Jan. 1703.

John Niles was at Dorchester in Sept. 1634, and settled at Braintree in 1636.

2. John Niles (John), born 4 Mar. 1639, died at New Shoreham (Block Island), RI, 7 Sept. 1683. He married Abigail ____, who survived him, and married secondly 11 June 1701, John Banning of New Shoreham.

3. Joseph Niles ( John) was born 15 Aug. 1640. He married, 2 Nov. 1662, Mary Micall ( or Mycall).

Children, born at Braintree, Mass.: Hannah, b. 15, Feb. 1663/4.

Joseph, b. 21 Sept. 1666: m. Patience ____. He was made a free man of Rhode Island in 1709. He witnessed a deed of Benjamin Niles at Lyme, Conn., in 1710. In his will, dated at Lyme, in 1731, he left all his property to his wife Patience.

10. John, b. about 1671.

Benjamin. b. 2 Jan. 1674/5/ d. 27 Feb. 1724/5; m. (1) 19 May 1698 Ruth Scant; m. (2) 17 Jan. 1715/16 Lydia Seacum.

Child by first wife: David, b. 20 Oct. 1700; m. 20 Dec. 1730 Hannah Sekin (Secomb).

4. Nathaniel Niles (John), cooper, born 16 Aug. 1642, died at Braintree, Mass., 22 Dec. 1727. He married at Block Island, RI, 14 Feb. 1671 Sarah Sandys, daughter of James and Sarah Sandys off New Shoreham (Block Island).

Nathaniel Niles was at Block Island in 1670. He bought land at Lyme, Conn., in 1692, as appears from a deed from William and Richard Ely " of a tract of land in Lyme, known as Joshua's Town, in consideration of £70 silver money to me pd by Nathaniel Noiles, cooper, of Block Island," signed 13 Nov. 1692; but he did not settle at Lyme, for a deed of John Banning, signed 13 June 1701, of land in Joshua's Town, calls him "Nathaniel Noyles of Rochester or Kingston" (RI). A deed was signed at New Shoreham 11 June 1701 from "Nathaniel Noiles to John Banning."

5. Samuel Niles ( John), born 12 May 1644, died 5 Sept. 1724. He married 20 Apr. 1680, Mary (Billings) Belcher, daughter of Roger Billings and widow of Samuel Belcher.

Sarah, b. in Jan. 1680/1; m. in 1709, as his second wife, Thomas Reed of Weymouth, Mass.

Hannah, b. in 1682

Bethiah, b. in 1684.

Samuel, b. 15 June 1686; d. 23 Nov. 1715; m. 18 Nov. 1708 Mercy Sacan (i.e., Secomb).


6. Increase Niles ( John) , born 16 Dec. 1646, died 1 Sept. 1693. He married, 4 Dec. 1677, Mary Purchase, born in Boston, Mass., 3 Feb. 1659/60, died 16 Apr. 1735, daughter of John and Elizabeth Purchase of Boston. She married secondly Francis Nash, widower.

Increase Niles served from Oct. to Dec. 1675 in Johnson's company, in King Philip's War.

Increase, b. 9 Mar. 1680/81; d. 11 may 1751 or 12 May 1752; m. 28 July 1715 Sarah Littlefield.

Ebenezer, b. in 1683; d. 11 May 1751.

7. Benjamin Niles (John), born 11 Mar. 1650/1, died at Lyme, Conn. in 1712. He married Ruth ____, who survived him.

He removed from Braintree to New Shoreham, RI, later than his brother Nathaniel, but is mentioned in a return of the Lyme town meeting of 19 Nov. 1690. His estate was distributed 7 Oct. 1712 by his sons-in-law.
