The following information came to me from Joan (Gatz) Kintner, a descendant of William Keen, son of John Keen (1750 - abt. 1830). ÊMany Thanks.

From the "History of Bradford County, PA"

JOHN A. KEEN, farmer, P.O. Rummerfield Creek, is one of the leading and influential citizens of Bradford County, and in his social and home life is regarded by all as a most valuable citizen. By the congregation of the Keen Summit Church he is regarded as the foster father of that organization, and its fine church building and present prosperous congregation, as is well indicated by the corporate name of the institution, toward the building up of which he is the leading spirit. He was born in Sussex county, N. J. , January 30, 1820, and is a son of William Keen, a native of New Jersey, born in 1792, and a grandson of John Keen, of German descent, who had five children by his first wife: Peter, Abraham, George, Mary (wife of Richard Stull), and Lizzie ( wife of George Emory): by his second wife, Rose, he had four children: William, Isaac, Aaron and Nancy. William Keen came to this State in 1847, bringing with him his wife, nee Elizabeth Huff, daughter of Peter Huff: they had a family of eight children: John A., Sarah Anne (wife of James Crawn), Joseph, Aaron, Polly, Theophilus, Peter, and Mary (wife of Sterling Dixon). William Keen died in September, 1880, and his wife in 1882. ............ (there is more about John A. Keen)

Taken from my book "Line of Descent of George Roger Gilbert", Part IV:

Five Great - Grandparents
and beyond

250. Johannes Kuhn (Keen) and 251. Eva Elizabeth __?__ - (125. Elizabeth Keen, 62. John Keen Emery, 31. Susanna Emery, 15. Jane Elisabeth Gunderman, 07. Loretta DeWitt, 03, Mildred Barber, 01. George Roger Gilbert.)

Much of the information I have collected concerning the Keen (Kuehn, Kuhn, Kiehn, Ceen) family of Sussex & Hunterdon Counties in New Jersey remains for me to make definitive familial connections. I have gathered alot of data and I have made some tentative conclusions but cannot be 100% certain I am correct. Because of the method used by my German ancestors in naming their children I am faced with a sorting out task that requires more information and records. There were at least two Johannes and Johann George Keen's living in the 1700's in northern New Jersey. These people also named some of their children Johannes and Johann George. Because of their ethnic heritage and proximity to each other, many interfamilial marriages occurred in the Hardwick and Stillwater areas of New Jersey.

I know there was a Kuhn (Keen) family living in Knowlton and Stillwater, NJ in the early 1700's . At this point I believe the first family of Keens consisted of the following children:

Johannes, Johann George and Catherine with the possibility of many others .

Theodore Frelinghuysen Chambers, in his book, THE EARLY GERMANS OF NEW JERSEY THEIR HISTORY, CHURCHES AND GENEALOGIES, has chronicled the family of Catherine Kiehn as follows.

The Adam Family
from
Chambers' - Early Germans of New Jersey

STOPHEL [CHRISTOPHER] ADAM - signs call to Rev. Albert Weygand, 1749, (and on another list occurs Maria Elizabeth Adam); b. 1723, June 15, d. 1788, Aug. 15, at 65 years and 2 months: buried Stillwater and has German headstone: m. Catherine Kiehn, b. 1720, d. 1799 at 78; his will, "Hardwick" 1788, Aug. 15, prob. Oct. 14, (Trenton Lib. 31, fol. 146), names w. Catharine and 6 ch.: five of these are found on records of the Lutheran Church, Stillwater:

Children:

1. Christina, Confirmed 1777
2. Henrich, b. 1763, Conf. 1782 at 19.
3. Anna Catherine, b. 1764, Conf. 1782 at 18.
4. Hanna, b. 1765, conf. 1782 at 17.
5. Anna Barbara, b. 1766, conf. 1782 at 16.
6. Jacob

I do not have a birth or baptismal record for Johannes Kuhn nor Johann Georg and Chambers' book published in 1895, claims those early records are lost or destroyed.

I am thus reduced here to simply record the information I have so far collected. The following families I have put together from the Stillwater (Lutheran) Presbyterian Church Records which begin around 1780; the records of Francis Stephen Crawn, now deceased; gravestone inscriptions and Chamber's "Early Germans of New Jersey". I have tried to be as accurate as possible in forming these records.

My ancestral families of Keen, Gruber and Savercool need to be studied together. There are possibly intermarriages early on for which I have no records. Members of these families may also have become in-laws through marriages to the same families.

From the Stillwater church records, copied by Mr. Crawn, I found that in 1775 Johannes Kien had a wife named Magdalena, a son Peter and a daughter Margaretha. At that time George Kien had a daughter Catherine Kienen. From these records that follow I have tried to put together the family relationships I believe to be correct. In addition I consulted my own records of burials in the various cemeteries around Stillwater as well as some marriage records of the times. I am 99% certain of the relationships that occured after 1780 because I have records. I am only speculating about relationships before 1780.

Stillwater (Lutheran) Presbyterian Church records according to Mr. Crawn.
